Well holy god I never knew that was Carlow

June 28th, 2011 by

The Deep River Rock ad has been on the telly box for some time now, but I never realised the picturesque bridge at the beginning of the ad is Carlow.  A friend informed me it was, I didn’t believe him and consulted with the interwebs for a more trustworthy source of answers.  The Monte Carlow Facebook page confirmed it was indeed the picturesque bridge at Milford.

The Midnight Phil Eoin Callers – Richie Kavanagh song

April 10th, 2011 by

The Carlow People ran an article this week on a ‘super freaky ode to Richie Kavanagh’. I felt compelled to investigate further.

Richie Kavanagh needs no introduction. Well maybe he does, for the younger generation that is. Richie Kavanagh is a singer song writer and all round entertainer from Carlow. His style of songs is what sets him apart. Slapstick humour and innuendo are key components to his music.

The Midnight Phil Eoin Callers is a cheesy 80′s style band from Dublin.  I haven’t been able to find too much about them online.  They have launched a new album, available to download free from their website.  I’m guessing its an album of piss takes.  They have put together a cheesy love song with the direction of their affection being Richie Kavanagh, specifically sex with Richie Kavanagh being desired.  Lets hope they never make that video.  Below is the video to their Richie Kavanagh song.  I’m still undecided how funny it actually is, I have laughed, I have cringed, I have turned off.  Have your say in the poll!

How do you rate the Richie Kavanagh song by the Midnight Phil Eoin Callers

Bizarre reference to Bagenalstown on The Late Late Show

December 6th, 2010 by

Bagenalstown or Muine Bheag is a small town in County Carlow. It is surprisingly well known, largely due to the location on what was the old Waterford to Dublin road and also the Muine Bheag train station commuters pass through daily.

On Friday last, it became known for a line in a sketch by the Apres Match guys. Check out the bizarre reference below.

Carlow Culture Night

September 19th, 2010 by

Culture Night was originally a night specific to Dublin. However it has expanded to other regions and this year Carlow has its very own culture night. Across Ireland on the 24th September over half a million culchies are expected to be engaging with culture.

First event of Carlow Culture Night begins at 1pm and the last event begins at 9.30pm.  All events take place in the fabulous new development of VISUAL Carlow.  The pick of the events for myself is the Opera Workshop.  Not because I want to be an opera singer but because of what the workshop is leading towards.  The Workshop is based around the Opera For Carlow project which will create an opera reflective of life in Carlow.  The workshop offers the chance for participants to audition for this project.  Also of interest is the performance of the Carlow Choir.  A Louisiana based choir but with strong links to Carlow College.

So next Friday go out and try something new on your Friday night in Carlow. Full timetable of events can be found here.  Any questions about the night should be directed to the Carlow Arts office here.

Pacos De Ferreira Supporters Club – Carlow Branch

September 11th, 2010 by

Carlow interest in Portugese football spiked considerably in recent weeks as news of Padraig Amonds move to FC Pacos De Ferreira progressed from rumour to fact. The strikers rise from underage levels to seniors is well documented but his new club is less well known.

Pacos De Ferreira play in the top tier of the Portuguese Liga alongside familiar teams such as FC Porto, Braga and Benfica. Three games into the season, they occupy mid table having won one and drawn two. Last season they finished tenth (of sixteen) in the league. The club has several lower division honours but at the top level, the highlight of their history would appear to be Uefa / Europa Cup qualification in 2007 and 2009 respectively. They play their home games at the Estadio da Mata Real, a stadium with a slight resemblence to the Tallaght Stadium.

The stadium is located to the West of Portugal, not far from the coast. Getting there from Ireland is reasonably straight forward. Fly to Oporto airport and make your way east, approx 30km, to Pacos De Ferreira.

With the ease of access I can certainly see myself heading over to a game. I am sure there will be a considreable Carlow contingent heading over throughout the year. Best of luck to Padraig, heres hoping for a successful first season.

Carlow student speaks out about Leaving Cert cheating

June 18th, 2010 by

An unnamed Carlow Leaving Certificate student has made headlines this week by posting her observations of cheating during Leaving Certificate exams in a Carlow school.  The post was made on Boards.ie and can be read in full, here.  The post received over 700 replies.  More significanly, the post has prompted a state investigation into these allegations.  The 700 replies to the post are a mix of helpful advice, anger directed at “the snitch”, anger directed at the cheaters and anger directed to the examiners.

While the story has deservedly caused a stir, cheating in the Leaving Certificate is not a new, recession inspired tactic.  I cheated in my Leaving Certificate all of eleven years ago.  What was my weapon of choice?  While on a toilet break, I simply picked up a textbook outside the door of the exam hall and searched for the required text.

The Leaving Certificate remains too pressurised for students.  The Leaving Certificate remains a memory test.  The type of cheating outlined above and by the Boards.ie post only holds value in an exam where repeating text from a book scores you marks.  A focus on the understanding of a topic rather than being able to rattle off its definition would not only make cheating more difficult but would also produce a better graduate and ultimately a better workforce.  This is my opinion, please feel free to add your comments below.

So to try gauge the extent of cheating (past and present) in the Leaving Certificate in Carlow, I have added a poll below.  Have your say.

Have you cheated in the Leaving Cert?
