Carlow Christmas Market

December 12th, 2011 by

A new Event in the Carlow calender, something that I hope becomes an annual event, happened last weekend. The Carlow Christmas Market.

With all the splendor of a European Christmas Market(Me, with first hand experience of them :) ), it kicked off in front of the Town Hall, in Hay Market square. Really was a good day, free pizza, some lovely choral and festive singing,  and ,most of all, the tree lighting up for Christmas!

Anyway….. I made a little video. Not the greatest. Was meant to make another video, and wasn’t prepared for doing this one. Have a little look anyway^^

Operation Super Transformation

May 29th, 2011 by

Operation Super Transformation is a novel way to help improve the health and diet of locals but also raise needed funds for a local cause.  20 people will be chosen to take part in the even over 12 weeks.  Their bodies will be put to the test and their success measured each week.

However, you do not have to be one of the 20 to join in.  Everyone is encouraged to mimic the exercise and diets of the selected 20 and compare their success.

Bootcamps begin this week as follows:

Leighlinbridge GFC, Ballinaboley

Tuesday 31st May @ 7pm

Old Leighlin GFC

Friday 3rd June @ 7pm

Of course the other aspect to this event is the collection of funds for The Superbowl development project.  Vale Wanderers are undergoing a major re-development of their pitch and funds are needed.  Be sure to give generously.

Carlow Culture Night

September 19th, 2010 by

Culture Night was originally a night specific to Dublin. However it has expanded to other regions and this year Carlow has its very own culture night. Across Ireland on the 24th September over half a million culchies are expected to be engaging with culture.

First event of Carlow Culture Night begins at 1pm and the last event begins at 9.30pm.  All events take place in the fabulous new development of VISUAL Carlow.  The pick of the events for myself is the Opera Workshop.  Not because I want to be an opera singer but because of what the workshop is leading towards.  The Workshop is based around the Opera For Carlow project which will create an opera reflective of life in Carlow.  The workshop offers the chance for participants to audition for this project.  Also of interest is the performance of the Carlow Choir.  A Louisiana based choir but with strong links to Carlow College.

So next Friday go out and try something new on your Friday night in Carlow. Full timetable of events can be found here.  Any questions about the night should be directed to the Carlow Arts office here.

Indie’go World Music Festival cancelled

August 8th, 2010 by

Only last week Monte Carlow hoped the Indie’Go Music Festival would be a success.  After only one night of the festival, the event was cancelled.  Why?  It is still not clear.  Many Twitter and Facebook accounts claim it was due to poor turn out.  The only official comment from the organisers appears on the Facebook page:

“PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT: Due to circumstances beyond our control Indie’Go World Music Festival has had to cancel the event. We sincerely regret and apologise that this has had to happen. Due to the circumstances we would like all public not to come to the festival site. Information regarding refunds will be available from the website www.indiegoworldmusic.ie in the coming days.”

We await official word of what happened.  Whatever the reason, Carlow has lost what could have been am interesting and valuable event.

Count down to The Indie’Go World Music Festival

August 2nd, 2010 by

The opening day of The Indie’Go World Music Festival is nearly upon us. On Friday 6th August the village of Fenagh will host the very first Indie’Go World Music Festival over three days. There is a diverse range of acts to suit all, including the kiddies. CLEERE is an act that will have a local interest.

The success of this festival could have a big impact on Carlow. Short term, local businesses will have some additional foot fall around the county. Long term, having a successful music festival could not only help with Carlows identity but also attract further cultural events.

Buy a ticket, spread the word.

Éigse Festival 2010

May 29th, 2010 by

Éigse, Carlow’s premiere annual arts festival, it is coming around soon again. This year is yet another impressive line up, with different traditional art galleries cropping up in unlikely places, interesting music and theatre, and anything else that is going to sample your palette on!

But, I hear you shout, what’s so different this year, well for one this is MonteCarlow’s first year online where we can cover it! That’s what’s so special! The one event definitely I am looking forward to, is “Jerry Fish and Mudbug Club”, a real cool and easy musical group, you can really set your teeth into! Playing in the George Bernard Shaw Theatre, and for only €15 it’s an absolute bargain! He is set to play 17/06/2010@21.30h with local support of another amazing band “sugar factory”!

We also get to get some international stand up comedy, from the great Andrew Maxwell. You may know him from such shows as RTÉ’s “the Panel” or BBC’s “mock the week”, a great night guaranteed! The tower will be putting up with him for this concert, and €18 for a night where you may be taken to hospital for your sides splitting, I think is good! (MonteCarlow does not guarantee hospital admittance nor you laughing, but if you don’t, you’re a dry old sod, lighten up!)

This is only the headlines at the minute as they stand, Éigse starts on June 11th and runs through to the 20th,2010, please visit the Eigse website to see the entire line-up, when their on or find direction to a venue.
